Ethel Maria Barkulis, 95, Phillips, died in the Aspirus Pleasant view Nursing Home in Phillips on Thursday, March 6, 2014. She was born Ethel Hietala in Brantwood, Wisconsin, on September 19, 1918, the daughter of Carl and Alexsandra (Soikkelii) Hietala. She ws married to Gus Barkulis on December 2, 1950, in St. Louis, MO. She was employed as a clerk at Kroeger Grocery in Chicago, Illinois. She and Gus moved to Prentice in 1974. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Prentice and was a Founding Member of the Prentice Area AARP Chapter 2278. She is survived by three children, Barbara Panos, St. Louis, MO, Louise (Charles) Reichman, St Francisville, LA, and Charles (Lynn) Barkulis, Bloomington, IL; by 15 grandchildren and by great grandchildren; and by two sisters, Sylvia Vayda, Phillips, and Pearl Beardsley, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus, on January 29, 1995; by one son, John Harris; by three sisters, Lillian Heurlin, Selina Wasti, and Frances Wayne; and by one brother, Urho Hietala.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 15 at the First Lutheran Church in Prentice with Pastor Richard Hall officiating. Interment will be in the Hackett Cemetery in the Town of Hackett. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of services.
