John Smart passed away on August 10th after suffering a heart attack.
He was born in Park Falls on December 28th 1940. John was educated in the Park Falls Public Schools and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin.
He spent his working career in New York, (for 9 years,) Chicago, (for 9 years,) and Minneapolis, (for 9 years,) before "retiring " and joining the Peace Corps, and serving in Uzbekistan for three years. After his service, he remained in Uzbekistan and continued his work with Aid To Artisans, an NGO.
John did finally retire and moved home to Park Falls in 1999 where he became very active in local and national politics. He was elected to the Park Falls School Board and hosted nine foreign students from Asia and Central Asia over the years.
John was preceded in death by his father, Bill, and his mother, Dixie. He is survived by his brothers, Jim (Cindie,) of Minneapolis, and Jerry, (Kaye) of Park Falls, and his beloved neice Casey of New York City.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday August 14, 2014 at 11:00am from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Falls. Fr. Aaron Zook will officiate.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00am until the hour of the service at the church.
