Zielke, Prellwitz, and Steven Scherwinski each collected 2 hits on the night. Zielke came on in relief to get the win. "It was not the prettiest game to watch, but we got the job done and a win is a win. We've blown a couple of these this year, so it was nice to hold on this time."

The Butternut baseball team traveled to Washburn on Monday and dug themselves a hole they could not get out of. After falling behind 7-1, they began to battle back, falling short 7-6. 10 walks led to the majority of Washburn’s early runs. Base running errors took the Midgets out of some early scoring opportunities. “The simple mistakes we continue to make, we have said will cost us in a close game, and tonight it happened.” “We are a young team, and we will make mistakes, but if you come ready to play in the 1st inning, some of those mistakes don’t happen.” Steven Scherwinski struggled on the mound a bit tonight, Ryan Prellwitz followed but was in and out of rhythm. We managed to get out of some jams early on, or it could have been over early. I do think the number of games in the last two weeks wore us out, both physically and mentally. We have stretch here to recharge and get ready to do something in Regionals. Malachi Zielke pitched well to hold us in during our rally. He also doubled twice in a 3 hit night, Joe Connelly and Miles Hirtreiter also had 2 hits. “I give our Seniors credit, with how young we are and the mistakes about our future, for their sake, I hope that starts in 2 weeks.
we make as a team, being Seniors and losing, many times you see them with the pack it in attitude. These 3 have continued to work had and push everyone to get better. We keep talking

Indianhead Conference leader Ironwood traveled to Butternut Thursday night and slowly pulled away with an 11-1 win. Steven Scherwinski took the loss on the mound for the Midgets (0-8, 2-12). “Just about every inning they put 2 guys on and knocked them in. We had chances to get out of a couple innings without giving up a run but either had a mistake or couldn’t make the big play to get out of the inning.” We hit the ball tonight, but continue to leave guys on. We are staying out of the big innings now, but can’t get out clean. That’s the difference between being 2-12 and a .500 club. We’re close, a couple clutch hits and a few plays in the field. That’s the difference every night.

Butternut finished 2nd in the Phillips Loggers baseball tournament on Saturday. The Midgets defeated Washburn 8-4 in the first game. Steven Scherwinski picked up the win on the mound and Malachi Zielke pitched the final innings to preserve the win. “It was an excellent team effort. Everyone contributed somehow. After our poor performance at Mellen on Thursday, we wanted to be sure to come out ready to play.” That was the difference in the game as the Midgets jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after 2 innings and held on for the win.
In game 2, Gabe Miesbauer took the loss in a 15-5 game against Hurley. “We still played ok. They are just a good hitting team. We made a few mistakes in the field and left too many runners on to compete with a team of this caliber.” “We are getter better. Building confidence and moving forward will be the keys to the rest of our season.”

Washburn 9 Butternut 5
Butternut dropped a home game to Washburn last night 9-5. Six errors in the first two innings led to a 7-0 Washburn lead. Malichi Zielke settled in after that and the Midgets clawed back with 3 runs in the 3rd capped by a 2 run double by Zielke. Single tallies in the 4th and 5th brought the score to 7-5, but Reijo pitched out of a bases loaded 1 out jam to end the 5th. Washburn got 2 insurance runs in the 6th for the 9-5 final.
“Malichi pitched well and deserved a win. Tonight we found out what not coming to play 7 innings and not executing will cost you.” We did some nice things, got out of some jams, more of the line up put the bat on the ball more consistently, but still not enough to get a W. We missed a lot of signs, had some base running errors that could have led to more runs. It was another small step forward for us, but no moral victory tonight, it’s a game we should have won.
