Butternut was scheduled for a DH at Bayfield on Thursday, but once again field conditions moved the game to Butternut.  The teams battled through cold, wet, windy conditions as Bayfield came out on top 14-9, with the second game cancelled due to weather.

Ryan Prellwitz and Kevin Leask both battled control with the cold conditions.  “The both struggled in the conditions, but gutted it out for their teams, each pitching the complete game.”

“We didn’t play as well as we had earlier in the week.  Given the conditions, the number of games this week, and the way we lost 2 tough games earlier in the week, a let down was probably coming.”

Riley Christian and Ryan Prellwitz each had 2 hits for the Midgets.  Now 0-7, they are off until Monday when they travel to Hurley for another DH.

The Butternut Midgets were at home for a 2nd straight night of DH action, hosting Ironwood last night. Ironwood got on the board early with 2 runs in the first, but Gabe Miesbauer’s 3 run HR in the bottom half put the Midgets in front.  A back and forth game had the game tied in the bottom of the 4th when Steven Scherwinski delivered a 2 out 2 run double to put the Midgets ahead.  But for the second straight night, a late rally proved costly as Ironwood scored 3 times in the 5th to win 8-7.  Gabe Miesbauer went the distance in the loss.

“This one was really tough.  Last night we knew how close we were to sneaking one from Drummond.  Tonight we know it was a game we could have, should have won.  A few little things are getting us.  It’s good to be in these ball games now, against quality teams.  We just have to get that first one for some confidence.  We are doing a lot of things right, just not quite enough for the win.”

In the 2nd game, a 7 run 3rd inning by Ironwood had them cruise to an 11-3 win.  Sam Miesbauer took the loss.

The Chequamegon High School softball team swept a twin bill at Abbotsford on Monday to move to 3-0 in Marawood North Conference play and to 8-1 overall.

Slated for two five-inning games, the 12th-ranked Screaming Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh on a double  by Danielle Masterson, and RBI single by Kristen Pechacek, an RBI ground out by Megan Mader and an RBI single by Hannah Gruber. Abby plated two in the bottom of the seventh before Chequamegon recorded the final out.

Masterson went 3-for-3 for Chequamegon and Gruber and Michelle Lobermeier had two hits each.

Megan Mader went the distance for the five-hit victory, fanning three and walking none.

Playing as the home team in the nightcap, the Screaming Eagles trailed 3-1 and were hitless entering the bottom of the fourth when an error opened the door to a nine-run inning. Megan Mader's RBI single closed the gap and Gruber plated the tying run with an RBI grounder. Jamie Palacek's single drove in the go-ahead run and Morgan Hilgart followed with a double. After an error and a walk, Masterson drilled a three-run homer over the centerfield fence and singles by Kristen Pechacek and Brianna Mader capped the outburst.

Brianna Mader allowed three hits and four walks, and fanned four for the victory in the circle.

The Butternut Midgets finally opened their home season last night in a DH with Drummond, the games moved to Butternut due to field conditions.  The Midgets dropped a heartbreaker in the first game, 3-2 in extra innings.  Drummond scored once in their final at bat to tie the game, then in extra innings, following an intentional walk to load the bases, Andrew McKinney delivered a single to left for the game winner.  Ryan Prellwitz went the distance for the loss.
“Ryan pitched great.  We played solid defense behind him and put the ball in play.  Drummond plays good defense and has bats up and down the line up.  We played good, it’s a tough loss.” – Coach Scherwinski
The night cap did not go as well.  A suicide squeeze in the 1st left Drummond up early 2-0 after one.  A grand slam by Ryan Shick in the 2nd inning blew the game open as Drummond then cruised to a 19-3 win.  Steven Scherwinski took the loss.
“Steven threw hard, threw strikes.  I think we were emotionally flat after the first game.  We did not play the solid defense behind him we need to, especially against a good hitting team like Drummond.  Overall, we showed some things that we can build on.”

Butternut 43  Lac Courte Oreilles 36
Butternut boys basketball team overcame a 7 point half time deficit to defeat the LCO Eagles at LCO last night 43-36.  14 second half points by Ryan Prellwitz lead the charge and 6 points late in the fourth by Steven Scherwinski sealed the win.  Coach Furtak said we talked at half time, it all starts with defense.  We were flat on both ends in the first half, too much standing around.  Christian Ernst and Riley Christian both played well and their spark got us going in the 3rd quarter.  The Midgets held the Eagles to 11 second half points. Butternut, 3-11 overall, host Wakefield on Tuesday.
