Lydia Agnes Smugala 97, Catawba, died at her home in the Town of Catawba while under the care of her family and Hope HospiceAnd Palliative Care, on Sunday, August 25, 2013. She was born on September 10, 1915, in Pennington, Wisconsin, the daughter of Joseph and Susanna (Kodai) Tomasik. In her working career she had been employed by Dr. George MacKinnon in Prentice, by Percy Faith in Chicago, IL, by Anderson Mink Ranch in Pennington, made Christmas wreaths, and operated a dairy farm with her husband, Andrew, in the Town of Catawba. She was married to Andrew Smugala in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Prentice on September 5, 1942. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church of Catawba, and was active in the CCW and teaching Catechism there.
She is survived by four children, Michael (Kathy), Ogema, Jim, Catawba, Mark (Janine), Catawba, and Andrea, Catawba; by 6 grandchildren, and by 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew, on September 28, 1983; by five sisters, Marie Burcaw, Frieda Kropeck, Cecelia Hauenstein, Helen Ohrstrom, and Josephine Smugala; and by three brothers, John, Henry, and Paul Tomasik.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 29, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Catawba with Father Gerald Hagen celebrating the Funeral Mass. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Ogema. Friends may call at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 29, and on Thursday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services. A prayer service will ve held at the church at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening.
