William Bruce Downing, 70, Phillips, died in the St. Joseph's
Hospital in Marshfield on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. He was born on
February 21, 1944, in Evanston, Illinois, the son of William and Myrtle
(Laxson) Downing. He attended and received his Bachelor of Science
Degree in biology from Western Illinois University of Macomb, Illinois.
He was married to Karren Olsen on June 10, 1969, in Waukegan, Illinois,
and they later divorced. He was married to Lynn Lange on June 14, 1996,
in Phillips. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin as a Probation
and Parole Officer, served as Director of the Price County Chapter of
Big Brothers and Big Sisters, then as a Case Manager by the Counseling
and Development Center, and also served as an adult foster care provider
for many years. He operated the Stage Door School of Dance in Phillips
for many years. He was a member and current President of the Phillips
Lions Club, served as a volunteer for Big Brothers and Sisters, was a
member of Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, and the
Wisconsin Trappers Association. He was a Team Member of the 1966-67
National Champion Western Illinois Gymnastics Team. In his free time he
enjoyed trapping, fishing, hunting, dancing, feeding birds, and
gymnastics. For his service to the Lions he was a recipient of the
Melvin Jones Award.
He is survived by his wife, Lynn; by two daughters, Jenny (Lora
Larson) Downing, Johnson Creek, WI, and Becky (Paul) Schilling,
Phillips; by step-children, Penny (Jonathan) Gregg, Vulcan, MI, David
(Toni) Lofgren, Cologne, MN, and Daniel, Eau Claire, WI; and by 9
grandchildren. One sister, Joann Mullen, precedes him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 31, St. John's Lutheran Church, Phillips, WI. with Rev. Thomas Reiff officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 P.M. until the time of services on Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Phillips, WI.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of a donation to
the Phillips Lions Club in Bill's memory.
