Gary Allen Dale
Gary Allen Dale, age 62, of Park Falls, a teacher, fisherman, gardener, and retired railroad man, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Gary was born in Dodgeville on September 29, 1947, to John and Alice Dale. He grew up in DeKalb, IL, and also spent a great deal of his childhood in the Boscobel area on the Chitwood family farm. Gary then attended UW-Stevens Point, where he studied fish and wildlife. It was there that he met his wife, Sybil White, of De Pere, WI, and they married on June 22, 1968. Gary and Sybil lived in North Fond du Lac for 20 years while Gary worked on the Soo Line Railroad. He then reinvented himself by changing career paths. Gary earned a Master's in Education from UW-Oshkosh and taught reading and social studies in Park Falls for nearly 20 years. He would always say that teaching was half the pay for twice the work but well worth it.
Gary enjoyed nature and was a voracious reader. He took many family vacations "up north", fishing and camping with his children. Gary was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook who enjoyed experimenting with recipes. He enjoyed, as he put it "generally loafing around outside, doing home repair, and making things but having absolutely no talent for it." He touched many lives as an educator and was well known for passing out wallet-sized photos of himself as rewards for his students. Gary had many interests but especially cherished spending time with his grandchildren. In all, Gary left this world a better place than he found it. He believed in the importance of education for all and in always doing the right thing, even in the face of adversitiy.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sybil, of Park Falls; his mother, Alice, of Madison; his sister, Jane (Sue Kittleson) of Madison; three children, Chis (Nancy Karls) of Praire de Sac, Alex (Amanda Breen) of Kailua, HI, and Jessica (Nurudeen Lawal) of Wausau; and three and a half granchildren, Zoe, Samuel, Madeline and Olivia. He is also survived by his extended family and many dear friends who spent much time helping with home projects and being true friends to Gary, especially these last few years. Last but not least, Farley, his trusted Labrador, protected and comforted Gary to the end.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, John Dale; his uncles, Keith Chitwood and Leroy Anderson; and his cousin, Susie Chitwood.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Park Falls, with visitation for family and friends beginning at 10:30 am. A luncheon will follow at the Padua Center.
The family would like to thank Dr. Reding and the oncology staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and the Marshfield Clinic, as well as all of the nurses, aides, and volunteers who provided hospice care and support. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Gary's name to the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Marshfield, WI.
