Howard D. "Jack" Russell, 88, Butternut



 
 Howard D. “Jack” Russell
age 88, of Butternut, died on Monday October 22, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.  He was born on May 12, 1924 in Butternut, the son of Henry and Louise (Felsch) Russell.  His early life and schooling were in Butternut.  He enlisted in the US Maritime Service on April 30, 1943 and served until May of 1946.  He was drafted into the US Army on January 28, 1949 and served until February of 1950 when he was released to the Army Reserves.  He was recalled to active duty for the Army during the Korean War from September of 1950 to October of 1951.  On October 13, 1951 he married Marion Bentz at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Butternut.  Jack was a lifelong member of St. Paul's serving as an Elder, President of the Building committee for the present parsonage and other committees.  He was a member of the Butternut American Legion Post #272 for 60 years.  During these years he was Commander, Finance Officer and Sergeant of the Firing Squad.  He was also Ashland County Commander.  He was employed by several companies in the Milwaukee area before working for the Flambeau Paper Mill in Park Falls from 1953 until his retirement as Shift Supervisor in the machine room in 1986.  During retirement Jack and Marion enjoyed traveling and attended many Korean Veteran reunions held in different cities in the US and Canada.  Jack enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, making firewood, and yard work at their Agenda property.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Russell, his brother-in-law Harlan Bentz, and nephew David Rosten.
 
Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 27, 2012 at 11:00am from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Butternut.  Rev. John A. Deitz will officiate.
 
Burial will follow at Butternut Union Cemetery with military rites under the auspices of the Butternut American Legion Post.
 
A visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00am until the hour of the service at the church.
 
The Novitzke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
