Barbara Mary (Kort) Masterson passed away Sunday, Jan 27, 2013 at her residence with her loving family near her side. She was born in Clintonville, WI on October 6th, 1950. At an early age, Barb moved to Carpentersville, IL with her family and then to West Dundee where she graduated from St. Edwards Catholic High School. Barb met the love of her life, Pat Masterson, at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital and the two were married on April 25th, 1970.
Over the next few years, Barb and Pat moved to Milwaukee, Stevens Point and then finally just outside of Butternut, where the two have lived happily together ever since. Barb is survived by her husband of 42 years, Patrick Masterson; their four children: Alyce (Scott) Javenkoski of South Range; Benjamin (Hilary) Masterson of Butternut, Hugh Masterson of Milwaukee, and Casey (Erin) Masterson of Milwaukee.
In addition to her family, Barb dedicated herself to her work. As a nurse at the Flambeau Medical Center in Park Falls, Barb worked tirelessly to provide the best care possible to her patients. As the only Critical Care Registered Nurse in the facility, she was always eager to help teach others and was first to respond to a patient in crisis. According to her former coworkers, “Everyone breathed easier when Barb was on the scene.”
During her retirement, Barb greatly enjoyed spending her time with her friends and family at their cabin on Lac Sault Dore near Phillips. One of her most enjoyable events was a cross-country train trip she took with Pat that began in Chicago and headed to the Southwest United States, then north up the West Coast to visit their son in Portland, Oregon, before heading home through Glacier National Park.
Barb mastered every craft she attempted – needlepoint, cross stitch, crochet, quilting, soap making, gardening, canning, baking, cooking, reading, dancing, singing, and especially knitting. Many, many people have been blessed with the fruits of her hobbies.
Barb is preceded in death by her father Howard Kort, her sister Kathleen Kort, and her granddaughter Cassidy Javenkoski. In addition to her husband and children, Barb is survived by her mother: Dorothy Kort; her siblings: Daniel Kort, Bruce Kort, and Elizabeth Kort; her grandchildren: Betsy, Jamie & Dylan Javenkoski, and Clare & Ethan Masterson; and her great grandson Hunter.
A gathering will be held at Dick and Joan’s Butternut Resort on Thursday the 31st of January from 1:00-3:00 pm with a memorial service at 3:00 o’clock with Pastor Angela Fairbanks officiating.
